Bloc leaders urged to work with police to fight crime
National director of community policing and rural police units Alexander Ngwala has urged the newly elected bloc leaders under Kawale Police Station in Lilongwe to work together with police to prevent crime and mob justice cases.
Speaking yesterday in Kawale during a meeting with over 100 bloc leaders, he stressed the need for community policing structures to curb criminal activities through joint patrols with police officers.
“This is to ensure that we revitalise community policing structures and work together as we strive to curb criminal activities in the city,” said Ngwala.
He, however, bemoaned the torching of police units whenever community members disagree with police officers, saying dialogue is the only solution.
Central West Region executive committee chairperson Alex Chapondera shared the same sentiments and urged the bloc leaders to coordinate efforts with the gazetted traditional leaders to ensure smooth running of community policing structures.
On his part, bloc leader Brian Mtambo of Block C Mchesi commended the police for the timely message.

He said Mchesi, for instance, has no vibrant community policing structures and, following the meeting, they will set up one for community safety and security.
Some of the officers who attended the meeting are Kawale Police station officer Marko Mvukuta, Central West Region community policing coordinator Superintendent Cagetan Singano and Kawale Police Station community policing coordinator Inspector Mayeso Chikadza.
